Pasadena Showcase House of Design 2024: Step Inside the English Tudor Revival Manse

interior design tudor home

Tudor architecture is a stately and historical architectural style that developed in medieval England and Wales and reached its distinct look during the 16th-century Tudor period. A traditional Tudor-style home features a façade with white stucco exteriors punctuated with decorative half-timbering or a dark brick-and-stone construction. This charming storybook house style made its way to the United States in the 1900s and now Tudor buildings are found in many neighborhoods around the country. Hawk & Co creates a captivating synthesis of aesthetics and psychology in each of its interiors. Founded by Summer Jensen, the firm is dedicated to contrasting light and shadow, exquisitely meticulous attention to detail, and a deference to the natural environment.

For the backsplash, you can go for a white pattern that adds even more depth to the design but does not clash with the beige walls in the rest of the kitchen. Up next is a beautiful kitchen interior that combines different materials to create an eclectic look that is charming and quintessentially Tudor style. Flanking the painting are two windows, and you can use two different styles of curtains for more variety and texture. Make sure to use colors that are still cohesive, but you can still use basic patterns like the vertical stripes on the left curtain. At Borisoff Design Studio, founder Lauren Borisoff and her team pursue stepping boldly and intentionally into the uncharted while tailoring every space to reflect the owner or resident.

For materials, however your go-tos are natural fibres like jute and sisal. Suggest a heavy-Oak furniture item, like the four poster bed with a canopy on top – a staple in Tudor design. It may be a big investment, but it’ll serve your client for ages to come. Use them handsomely – as hardware for kitchen cabinets, lamp bases, tables etc. The first impression of the exterior makes you fall in love with the home.

Select dark wood with ornate patterns

A similar green with earthy, neutral undertones from Farrow & Ball manages to be both cool and rich. This color makes for an excellent choice when giving your Tudor-style home fresh color. Notice how the exposed brick wall acts as both an accent wall and a representation of the house’s unique style. This use of raw materials allows you to embrace the natural appeal of your home and go back to its roots. Plus, you can make the most of awkward nooks and corners by placing a coffee table and armchairs to create your own seating area. If you have a simple attic bedroom with slanted and low ceiling height, there is no need to worry! With a few simple interior tricks, you can make it into a super cozy space that feels relaxing. It evokes such a timeless look that can transport you to another time and matches the red-and-gold curtains on the side. Coupling natural light with ambient lighting can also give an atmospheric mood.

Ways to Approach a Minimalist Living Room

Heavy oak furniture is a staple of the Tudor style, including the classic four-poster bed. According to Architectural Digest, four-poster beds are charming furniture pieces that make a dramatic statement in any space. While four-poster beds come in many styles and materials, oak is the wood type best suited to a Tudor-style bedroom. To make a Tudor-style statement, look for a four-poster bed with fleur-de-lis and rose carvings. For a final touch, incorporate damask and brocade fabrics as bedspreads, runners, drapes, and wall hangings. With over a decade of experience, Olivia has had the joy of working on a wide range of award-winning projects, including residential, retail, office, and restaurant design.

The look of the beams did begin to change in the US, however, when designers began to change the color of the beams, painting them blue or green. When Ian Thompson and Muna Coobtee fell in love with a 1920s Tudor home in the Silver Lake Hills neighborhood of Los Angeles, they knew extensive renovations would be in their future. You can choose other furniture pieces in this wood to complement the rest of your home. Trestles and side tables make excellent options in the dining room or kitchen.

The kitchen felt particularly small and closed in, with four doors opening into it. The lack of prep space was a major downside for John, the family chef, who makes dinner nightly. The laundry room, which had been squeezed into a tiny corner alcove, had no countertop, and, when the door was open, impeded traffic flow in the cook space. Elsewhere, there was one bathroom for all three children, and no mudroom where a young family could stash boots, coats, and backpacks.

For some, the dim lighting, thick rug, and flickering candlelight can be extremely appealing. We’d recommend going for something black with flickering warm lights to enhance the atmosphere even more. It may even be a good idea to add a pop of color and pattern with a dramatic rug. For instance, this traditional handwoven rug acts as a separator and spotlight of the eating area.

Each bathroom has a generous vanity, plenty of storage, and clean bright tile by Clé. At the end of the day, the couple think of the home as their dream project—with an undeniable flow and a synergistic relationship between the indoors and the outdoors. To start with, you can place a pair of green armchairs by the window or wall, then a complementary side table in the middle. This is where you can also display some personal items or indoor plants.

For upholsteries, pick out hopsack, silk, velvet, linen, wool, jute and rattan to get the desired finish. Crank up your design game up a notch by including immaculate details in the upholsteries. Choose these patterns in your upholsteries and hyper-personalize the design – traditional prints of gingham, plaid, ticking stripe, chintz, floral damask, suzani and twill patterns.

According to Foter Magazine, decorative fireplaces are natural focal points in a room. If you don't already have one, get a little creative and DIY or purchase a faux fireplace for your home. Wall hangings are an excellent way to spruce up your home and add visual appeal. According to Visual Arts Encyclopedia, these elegant pieces work well in a Tudor home because tapestries were an art feature in England during the 16th century. Just like Persian or Turkish rugs for your floors, these pieces serve as minor accents or statement pieces on your walls. If you don't want to go overboard with wrought iron in your home, decorate with accents like wall sconces or torches (via SFGate).

gold leaf design

Reading this gives but a nuanced insight into the Charm of Gold Leaf painting. It strives to illuminate the multifaceted intricacies of this artistic technique, yet, only direct contact with gold leaf and the canvas can bring to light its true magic. Despite the technical challenges that accompany the process, the rewards it holds are substantial and far-reaching. Each delicate sheet of gold leaf brings with it a unique touch of splendour, which when thoughtfully aligned with the overarching design, lifts the artwork to an unprecedented height of beauty. The artistic journey with gold leaf is fundamentally a precise dance – careful, calculated yet free-flowing, resulting in compositions that echo with elegance and timelessness. Embrace, explore, and immerse into this golden craft and it promises a transformative experience, where mere surfaces metamorphose into canvases of magnificence.

Protection: The Last Step

For metallic leaf application, surfaces need to be clean, smooth, and free of dust or oils. Remember, preparation is often the key to successful gold leaf application. Preparing air dry clay For air dry clay creations, they’ll need to be sealed first. Use acrylic gloss medium or a mix of PVA glue and water to seal your air-dry clay before you apply any sizing. This is because the clay will absorb the size, meaning the gold won’t stick. The adhesive, often referred to as ‘size’, is crucial in this process.

Cotton Watercolour Paper Premium 300gsm Product Demo

Follow up with a gilder’s burnisher, giving a thorough but gentle rub. This process will smooth down the leaf whilst improving its adherence, revealing its full luminosity. To engage in the application of gold leaf onto a surface is to participate in a tradition that spans centuries and cultures. But the meditative act of gilding is not purely reminiscent of history; it is a process gleaming with modern relevance. Today, let us embark on the journey of understanding how to apply gold leaf effectively. Take your sheets of gold metal leaf and place them on the areas containing the adhesive.

Green Wall, Mini Texture Leaf 1

Carefully apply the gold leaf using gilder’s tip onto the ‘sized’ area. Let the delicate sheet touch the prep surface slightly, then tip off rest of the leaf sheet. Be gentle with the gold leaf as it is fragile and prone to damage. Discovering the capture of vivid elegance through gold leaf painting can be a tremendously rewarding adventure.

Art supply stores carry the kind of gold leaf sheets you need for gilding, which has been taking off as a trendy DIY craft. It's clear from the content that he's completing this project with care, and he makes the gilding part look so easy and quick. However, any DIYer who has worked with gold leaf sheets knows how temperamental they are—especially if there's any type of breeze in the room. Read this expert advice before you commit to making over your own entryway. To apply gold leaf, start by brushing on a layer of Gilder’s primer over the area you want to gild, followed by a layer of gilding adhesive. While the adhesive is drying, cut the leaf into smaller pieces to make it easier to work with.

Green Wall, Mini Alocasia 1

Since the sheets of metal leaf are very thin and tear easily, consider wearing soft cotton gloves for easier application. Use your fingers to smooth the gold leaf flat on the adhesive strips to prevent bubbles or divots. If you’re working with an artwork like watercolour, gouache, acrylic, or oil paintings, just make sure your work has dried completely, and it’s free from any dust or dirt.

Go Off the wall

It imparts a majestic glow and texture that can transform the ordinary into the extraordinary. Use a regular paintbrush to apply the adhesive to your painting. You only need to brush it onto the sections you will cover in gold leaf. California Wall Design's team is based in Los Angeles California. They are considered by many top interior designers around the world to be the top experts in gold leaf applications. You can see their work on display in the Bahamas, Asia and in Beverly Hills.

Lightly passing the brush hairs over your skin might aid in creating adequate static to pick up the gold leaf. Loose leaf can easily be blown away–the slightest gust of wind will send your gold leaf flying! We recommend you only use loose leaf indoors with specialized tools, like the Gilder’s Tip and the Gilding Pad. Use this easy DIY technique to add shimmer to any decor by learning how to gold leaf.

For dried and oil pastel artworks, these will be difficult to apply size to, because of their oily consistency, so it’s best to apply your sizing to paper rather than pastels. Using a soft taklon brush, apply a thin even layer of the size onto the area that you’re wanting the gold to stick to. (Keeping in mind, the gold leaf will only stick to the areas that have been sized.)  Wash the brush immediately with water to clean, then allow 25 mins for the size to become tacky, before applying leaf.

The ‘size’ should be thinly and evenly applied over your chosen area using a soft-hair brush. Layering gold leaf over a surface is called gold leafing or gilding. Traditional water gilding is the most difficult and highly regarded form of gold leafing. It has remained virtually unchanged for hundreds of years and is still done by hand. The inexpensive craft supply adds a hint of glamour to anything it is applied to, whether a vase, holiday accents, or a piece of furniture. Plus, it's made with real gold for that perfect metallic sheen.

Then, remove the leaf from the tissue paper backing, lay it over your object, and place the tissue backing on top of the gold. Press down on the tissue paper with your finger to remove any air pockets, then smooth out the leaf with a gilder’s brush. Finally, seal the gold leaf with an acrylic topcoat to protect the leaf from damage. To learn more, including how to give your gilded surface an antique look, scroll down. Preparing a non-porous surface To apply guild leaf to a surface such as cured plaster, glass, metal, and stone, you’ll need to clean the surface first.

In sculpture and architecture, gold leaf imparts a grand presence, transforming edifices into breathtaking masterpieces. From historical landmarks such as Versailles to modern works of public art, this material has proven its enduring charm and impact. Appreciated for its lightweight nature and extreme malleability, gold leaf can be applied to large and small surfaces alike.

Grab your paintbrush and jar of adhesive and apply a smooth coat on the item in your desired design. All of these examples use beaten gold, thin sheets of the precious metal, also called gold leaf. You can create some truly beautiful decor pieces with the sheets—and they don't have to be large to make an big impact.

Our Premium Iridescent Varnish will help keep the gold in place and it adds a touch of sparkle too. Apply this on a taklon brush, slightly overlapping each stroke, working side to side. "You can even buy a whole kit that has the special glue and the sheets. And then you can apply a sealer on top of that too, to seal it."

Gold glass is gold leaf held between two pieces of glass, and was used for decorated Ancient Roman vessels, where some of the gold was scraped off to form an image, as well as tesserae gold mosaics. Gold leaf is also used in Buddhist art to decorate statues and symbols. Gold leafing can also be seen on domes in religious and public architecture. Gold leaf painting, a meticulous art form intertwined with opulence and grandeur, has been capturing the fascination of artists and admirers alike for centuries. The technique, which incorporates thin sheets of gold, finely hammered to near transparency, provides an iridescent gold finish to the surfaces it graces.

Designing My Life Reflections from one of Stanfords Most Unique Courses by Nicholas Benavides

design your life stanford

It’s a prevalent approach to design and problem-solving at Stanford and in Silicon Valley. This course is designed to be flexible and adaptive to the needs of each user. The course is structured around a set of videos, with activities and exercises that correspond to each video subject.

I’m majoring in the Humanities — does it apply for me?

This class offers a framework, tools, and most importantly a place and a community of peers and mentors where we’ll work on these issues through assigned readings, reflections, and in-class exercises. The course employs a design thinking approach to help students from any major develop a constructive and effective approach to finding and designing their lives and vocations after Stanford. Work with the Stanford Life Design Lab and a community of other educators in higher ed to develop a curricular prototype, and to craft a pitch to collaborators. Join an ongoing creative commons, not for profit community, sharing life design work with students in higher education. Any Stanford Junior or Senior who would like to learn and apply a creative approach to designing their life. The course will “work” for people in a wide range of situations — from having a solid major and a good career idea already to being ready to jump into a new major and restart.

Designing Your Stanford

Not having any desire to work at a huge tech company fits with this. Wanting to leave the people and organizations I encounter better than I found them fits with this. This 2.5-day workshop is based on the book, Designing Your Life, by Bill Burnett and Dave Evans. You will learn new ways to frame problems, strategies to help you get unstuck, and insights into your decision-making processes.

Stanford Design Your Career Workshop

She is a regular speaker, consultant and author on these subjects. The Stanford Center on Longevity Design Challenge is a global competition aimed at encouraging students to design products and services to improve the lives of people across all ages. Established in 2013, the Challenge is focused on ways to motivate and empower people in their daily lives both inside their homes and in their community. This year’s Design Challenge was focused on finding ways to help make life transitions at any age healthier or more meaningful. The Stanford Center on Longevity’s New Map of Life project suggests that, as it becomes more common to live for 100 years, the traditional life course will become both more complex and flexible, with people moving in and out of different roles multiple times.

Should you choose a career that helps the most people, one that makes the most money, or one that’s the most fun? What’s so important about being your authentic self if it means being an outcast? In this course, students will design their own “life philosophy,” drawing inspiration in views of the good life put forward by history’s great philosophers and exploring how their theories are reflected in the world around us in pop culture. We also engage with cutting-edge developments in the philosophy of identity, thinking about what our race, gender, or sexuality tell us about who we are.

Learning 2: You get a better ROI from doubling down on strengths than from shoring up weaknesses.

It was created by Anjali Kalavar, Ryan Noble & Shelsea Veloz from Northwestern University and their teammate Joseph Murphy. The app includes “quests” such as cooking, housekeeping, and first aid, and leads users through guided scenarios to learn new skills. This post is a slight revision of my final assignment for the course, which tasked us with reflecting on the quarter and identifying several learnings and unlearnings.

ENGR104B: Designing Your Life

Following a simple playbook, you can create a plan that gets you to where you want to be, in your career and beyond. Taught by two Stanford design theory experts, this four-hour course addresses how a person can build an enjoyable, meaningful life using design theory. Students listen to a recorded live lecture, participate in thoughtful prompts, and gain scientifically backed tools to address their future. By the end, you'll design multiple life plans for the next five years, and learn to reframe unsolvable "Gravity Problems" — like an overseas job offer when you don't want to live far from your parents — without undue anxiety or dread. Design theory, a human-centered, psychology-focused methodology for designing products and services, can also help us build a life that's customized and enjoyable. Career Educators connect students with the people and knowledge needed to help them explore career paths, identify and apply for opportunities, and cultivate personalized networks that shape their professional journey.

This popular Stanford-led online course teaches you how to design your ideal life and career

But as wonderful as the Stanford experience often proves to be, it almost always presents a slew of difficult decisions and stressful tradeoffs. How do you choose a single major given the disparate interests you have? How do you discover all of the exciting opportunities Stanford has to offer? And once you’ve discovered them, how do you possibly choose among them?

Bill Burnett is an Adjunct Professor and the Executive Director of the Life Design Lab at Stanford. He holds a number of mechanical and design patents and design awards, and, in addition to his duties at Stanford, he advises several of his students’ startup companies. Using proven methodologies developed at Stanford University and made popular by the bestselling books Designing Your Life and Designing Your New Work Life by Bill Burnett and Dave Evans, life design has impacted millions of lives around the world. Designing Your Life is one of many courses we teach that applies the Design Thinking approach to wicked life problems. One of the advantages of this approach is it doesn’t start by asking the question, “Well —what is your passion?

As Founder of Holistic Connections, Inc., the company’s mission is to create transformative experiences for individuals and groups allowing for a deeper level of connection, awareness, and presence through unique integrative practices. These include the Enneagram of the Narrative Tradition, Kundalini yoga, meditation and breathwork and Emotional Polarity Technique as ways to unwind outdated narratives in order to connect with and reveal one’s authentic voice. The challenge is made possible by generous sponsorship from a number of companies and foundations. Lead sponsorship is provided by Target and Finance of America Reverse.

However, this course is not intended to be an introduction to design thinking. For an intro to design thinking, check out this virtual crash course. For a more on applying the design thinking process to your life and career, check out the best-selling Designing Your Life Book.

Second place was awarded to Bala, a digital app and game kit that provide financial literacy education for women going through midlife transitions. Are you a university educator looking to bring Designing Your Life to your campus? We offer a Life Design Studio for University Educators, a highly immersive educational experience for leading innovative educators in institutions of higher learning looking to be intentional about how students reflect on their experiences and build their future. This discussion-rich course is for students to learn design thinking to more confidently navigate life and careers as members and allies of the Black community. For juniors and seniors to design your life and career after Stanford. The content, exercises, and activities in this course are applications of many of the components of design thinking, and this course is a practical way of using design thinking for your career.

While some people really do know what they want to do with their lives, the large majority of people have to try a few things out and learn as they go. The steps along the way are prototypes to enjoy and learn from, not failures. The course uses design thinking to address the “wicked problem” of designing your life and career.

Based on my Odyssey Plan, I want to get back to writing down 3 ideas per day, as I was most excited about plans where I eventually start my own company. Writing down 3 ideas per day will get me in the mindset of looking for opportunities, and if I do it for a while I’ll probably have generated some great ideas. If you’ve made it this far, thanks for reading, and I hope something resonated with you. I wouldn’t say that this is a new idea, but many of the activities this quarter have really helped me clarify what I care about in work and in life. Wanting to have an important role at a smaller company that has a compelling mission fits with this.

Entertainment options have diversified with the recent addition of a bowling alley and plans for a large outdoor entertainment facility on Irving Blvd. Long term plans originally called for a boutique hotel and the District will finally host their first, Virgin Hotel. People were not only interested in buying my parts but also wanted me to install them. Seizing the opportunity, DD Designs transitioned from a personal project to a business. All these elements and phases come together to formulate a project from start to finish.

What Is the Purpose of Design Development (DD)?

There’s still give and take between the designer and the architect and costs are estimated but changes could still occur. Structural drawings are engineering drawings that detail the building structure and process. Registered engineers create structural drawings that are based on architectural drawings. These deal with load-carrying parts of the structure and show the size, dimensions and materials that should be used.

If predictability and more cost-management are valued, our copay product is the best choice. If you want to have a unique motorcycle that matches your individual vision and ideas, then you found the right man to go to. Creating structures that are habitable involves a lengthy process, and one that cannot afford any room for errors.

This led me to learn the art of designing and fabricating fiberglass parts on my own. DD Designs’ custom parts are hand fabricated, and every piece receives my personal attention to ensure superior quality. Machine-manufactured parts are made by our carefully selected partners who we trust to deliver excellent quality. BluEnt delivers value engineered enterprise grade business solutions for enterprises and individuals as they navigate the ever-changing landscape of success. We harness multi-professional synergies to spur platforms and processes towards increased value with experience, collaboration and efficiency. Before actual construction begins for a structure, it has to go through cycles of amendments and changes, typically done over software such as CAD.

Connecting with the right contractor is critical for a successful construction project. Not only will you need to accurately forecast your cost estimates, but you need to document the work to find a general contractor with the necessary expertise. The deliverable is a much more detailed set of drawings than in the schematic phase, and a specification book, which can be thought of as written instructions for the drawings. Construction is a culmination of different disciplines coming together to create an infrastructure that is functional and aesthetic at the same time. Let’s take a look at the various construction design stages that are crucial in construction documentation. Delta Dental's plans prioritize preventive care and dentist access, which helps keep health care costs low.

In addition, we are a stocking distributor for Williams Chemical Metering Pumps, one of the leading suppliers of electric and pneumatically-driven metering pumps for the global oil and gas industry. The main goal of this phase is to define and develop the important aspects of the project. The SD, DD and CD sets cover the construction design documentation phase. As the name implies, these are section drawings including wall and detail sections. They are drawn to scale, showing clearance, infrastructure, adjacent context and any other helpful references.

If the authority has questions, requires additional information, or requests changes/corrections to the drawings (all of these scenarios are common), your architect will take care of it. This helps with creating more accurate construction documents and also assists in the bidding and construction of the project. The deliverables that a design professional will prepare in this phase include preliminary drawings such as floor plans, elevations, and a site plan, if applicable. You may also see some sketches, or you could ask your architect to do some computer renderings (usually this would be another add-on service) to help you get a sense of how the spaces will look and feel.

Structural drawings don’t detail surface finishes, partition walls or even mechanical systems, they’re only structural and require approval from the building authority. Design development is an important phase in the architecture design process as it’s easier to make changes on paper (or digitally) than after construction has started. Design development takes more precise measurements and adds details to the final construction documents so the cost estimation is more precise. The design development done by the architect and the design team requires owner input as well as feedback from the general contractor and subcontractors.

This is why we work closely with each of our customers to understand their needs and preferences. From handlebars to fenders, suspension to wheels, you name it; we can create it. Delta Dental of California and Affiliates is a part of Delta Dental Plans Association. Through our national network of Delta Dental companies, we offer dental coverage in all 50 states, Puerto Rico and other U.S. territories.

A project begins with conceptual design and then moves into schematic design (SD), wherein the concepts are translated into physical drawings. The design team is responsible for making sure the general contractor executes the plans correctly. Ensuring that everything is going according to plan, especially if you’re not on the job site, requires real-time monitoring. Our live dashboards automatically capture and calculate six project metrics, which are displayed in easy-to-read graphs and charts. No setup is required and there are even customizable reports to delve deeper into the data. Consider BluEntCAD’s experts for your next construction drawing service.

Before setting foot on the construction site, a long process has already unfolded. It takes place over several phases, one of the most important being design development. This book will specify the materials that have been selected, and provide things like installation instructions, quality control requirements, and other technical information. These design development sets change many times to accommodate project requirements, client-requested modifications, and licensing authority guidelines before becoming approved for construction.

We specialize in exterior and interior construction drawing services, millwork shop drawings services, and 3D rendering services, all at a fast turnaround time and with 100% custom pricing. The final set of drawings and specifications will include the information that’s required to obtain a building permit from whichever local authority has jurisdiction (e.g., the city or county). Our company aims to provide custom solutions to each customer’s need and to deliver the best quality service possible. At Devin Diego Designs, we are passionate about modifications and motorcycles. We love what we do, and our pride in our work is evident in the details and quality of each project that we undertake. Laguna Design Center is Southern California’s premier destination for home furnishings and design expertise.

The design development phase of the architecture design process is made up of various documents that together define the parameters of the project. These design development documents include civil drawings, architectural drawings, structural drawings and mechanical drawings. The architecture design process, including design development, is a collaborative affair. ProjectManager is online construction project management software that’s designed to connect everyone on the project team in real time. We make it easy to share files, comment on work and tag people to bring them into the conversation. Any updates automatically trigger email notifications and in-app alerts to keep everyone updated.

Designers tend to like the visual workflow kanban boards, construction companies plan schedules and resources on more detailed Gantts and their crews check off work on list views. Owners have a higher view and rather see a calendar with milestones to ensure the project is on target. Our software has multiple project views that are updated automatically and in real time so there’s one source of truth. Architectural drawings are sketches, diagrams, plans or schematics used in the design process and during construction. The drawings show the inside and outside of the structure’s appearance and have precise measurements and details to execute the construction plan. There are multiple drawings with sheets indicating different aspects of the construction including everything from electrical and mechanical systems to plumbing.

A house exploded in Plum late Saturday morning, killing four people and injuring several others. Police said at least three people were taken to area hospitals with two in stable condition, both of whom have since been released. The third person remained in critical condition as of Saturday night. Any resident who has questions about gas service in the neighborhood can find updates here. Lanny Conley, the chief of the Plum Borough Police Department, said at a news conference Sunday afternoon that four adults and one adolescent had died and been recovered from the scene. The Safety Division appreciates the cooperation of Plum and Allegheny County, along with and various other local and state emergency agencies who have been part of the investigation, as well as residents and others impacted by this incident.

Those wells and pipelines were within a 2,500-foot radius of the home. The Department of Environmental Protection announced Friday that its investigators have completed an analysis of preliminary test results from its stray gas investigation. Those results do not indicate a stray gas migration incident. The Andy Zarroli family got the go-ahead Thursday to be able to continue living in their house, although they’re not sure that they will. Immediately after the explosion, Fischer said his neighborhood was flooded with gawkers. Neighbors said the Oravitzes were having issues with their hot water tank — something the Allegheny County Fire Marshal’s Office said it was aware of — and that Thomas, Sebunia and Clontz went over to help troubleshoot.

Investigators determined that it eventually failed after it corroded. This is not the first time a home has exploded in Plum Borough. Just last year in April, a home on Hialeah Drive was leveled. But, Allegheny County is asking people to avoid the area if they have no reason to be there. Neighbors said they smelled gas Tuesday and called the gas company, which confirmed the leaks.

Keegan’s attributes were many — kind, caring, strong and brave — but his hugs were legendary. He loved his sister, but especially when he was able to give her a hard time as only a brother can do. It’s no surprise that Keegan was with his father last Saturday morning. His family described him as Casey’s shadow — always alongside his father.

There also was another explosion in 1996 where natural gas was determined to be the cause. Despite this tragedy causing so much heartache, the community has been stepping up to help one another and first responders, donating things like food and water. Now technicians will go door to door to conduct a safety check and relight appliances. If residents aren't home, Peoples Gas said workers will leave a door hanger with customer service contact information and crews will be available on a 24/7 basis until service is fully restored. In a release late Monday, the county said the home where the explosion happened was having "hot water tank issues." The tank was in the basement.

Another person is still in critical condition at the hospital, and two others have since been released. First responders are done for the night, but police will remain on the scene securing the site. According to authorities, at least three "structures" were destroyed with at least a dozen houses damaged, including windows blown out.

While firefighting and recovery efforts were still active at the scene, investigators from the Safety Division began gathering preliminary information from residents, responders, and utilities around that location. I&E has the authority to bring enforcement action, seek emergency orders from the Commission or take other steps to enforce safety regulations and promote public safety. Emergency responders reported people trapped under debris after the blast leveled one house and left two others engulfed in flames, county spokesperson Amie Downs said. Crews from at least 18 fire departments worked to douse the flames with the help of water tankers from Allegheny and Westmoreland counties. PLUM, Pa. (AP) — Five people were found dead after a house explosion in western Pennsylvania that destroyed three structures and damaged at least a dozen others, authorities said Sunday.

The borough also has not yet received any applications for alterations to any houses there. Hubner said the Zarroli house isn’t as badly damaged as others in the vicinity because of where and how it sits. Hubner said the side of the house facing the explosion, which took most of the concussion, will need to be stripped to look for framing damage.

Three nearby homes were destroyed and a dozen other homes were damaged in the blast on Saturday. Borough Manager Michael Thomas, 57, was also killed in the blast. He lived one home over, but he was next door inside the home that exploded at the time. His wife, who is a teacher at Butler Area School District, daughter and their dog were in their home.

Five people have died, including a teen, following a house explosion in Pennsylvania that caused multiple injuries and several house fires, officials told NBC News. Five people died and three others were injured after a house explosion on a suburban street in Pennsylvania on Saturday spread flames to several nearby homes, shattering windows and causing walls to crumble, the authorities said. It is important to note that I&E investigations are limited – by regulation – to the involvement of, or impact from, utilities and utility systems under the jurisdiction of the PUC, along with natural gas transported by those assets. When Thompson went outside Saturday morning, the family who lived to the right of the house that exploded, Harrison and Kelly Smith, were in her yard with their son, Levi. Peoples gas crews were on site, and a spokesman said gas was turned off in the affected area while the utility worked with emergency responders at the scene. Residents who need a place to go are being directed to Renton Volunteer Fire Department at 1996 Old Mine Rd.

More than 20 firefighters were evaluated, many for heat exhaustion, authorities said. He happens to be an Allegheny County Police officer with the county homicide unit, and rushed to the scene. The house that exploded, 141 Rustic Ridge Drive, is owned by Paul D. And Heather L. Oravitz, according to Allegheny County records. Those same records indicate that one of the neighboring houses that was destroyed is owned by Michael and Jacqueline Thomas. On Saturday, People's Gas had shut off gas service at 50 homes in the neighborhood "as a precaution," saying they could not estimate when service would be restored.

Since the explosion, Zarroli has struggled with understanding why it happened. Soboslay said the borough is continuing to get calls from residents asking for an inspector to look at properties. Plum has yet to receive any applications for demolition of homes in Rustic Ridge, said David Soboslay, the borough’s interim manager. Many doors will need to be rehung because they are sticking from the house moving.

We’re told Peoples Gas drilled holes on either side of the line and they’re testing the line. The Public Utilities Commission says it’s monitoring these integrity tests. The PUC added that they’re investigating if public utility infrastructure or operations contributed to the cause and circumstances surrounding the explosion.

The Allegheny County Fire Marshal's Office will return to the scene Sunday morning. They evaluated more than 20 firefighters, many for heat exhaustion. Three structures are completely destroyed, and at least a dozen more are damaged in some form. Officials told reporters at the scene they did not know exactly who was at home and who may have had visitors at the time of the explosion, so they could not provide an exact number of people considered missing. Plum Borough announced Saturday night that it was making the borough building available to residents in need on Sunday morning.

It is our collective responsibility to ensure the emotional well-being of our students and families as we navigate this unimaginable tragedy. In 2008, a house exploded along Mardi Gras Drive in Plum, killing a man and seriously injuring a 4-year-old girl. The National Transportation Safety Board investigated and discovered it was caused by a two-inch gas line that was damaged and then failed five years later after it corroded. The fire marshal is still investigating last year’s house explosion in Plum along Hialeah Drive. The Allegheny County Fire Marshal’s office has confirmed the house that exploded had hot water tank issues.

Safety Investigation Ongoing Following Deadly House Explosion in Plum Borough, Allegheny County

That determination came after all potential outside factors such as wells, pipeline, ground gas propagation and other utilities were inspected and tested at several levels by each of the various agencies and companies investigating the explosion. A previous update provided by emergency officials on Saturday night can be seen below. Water tankers were at the scene, as many local fire departments continued to respond. Allegheny County Emergency Management officials were also at the scene. Zarroli and his wife first lived in another house in Rustic Ridge. The houses on either side — the Thomas house closer to Zarroli and the home of Harrison and Kelly Smith on the other side — also were destroyed.

'Heartwrenching': Rustic Ridge residents come to terms with 5 deaths in house explosion

Officials were back at the scene Sunday morning, and a news conference was scheduled for noon, the Facebook post said. He said that gas and electrical services were shut off to most of the area Saturday "out of an abundance of caution" and that officials planned to work to restore some of the services. Two were stable when they were transported and were released, and the third was in critical condition, they said. Emergency medical workers treated 57 firefighters for minor issues while they responded to the explosion and fire, Chief Imbarlina said.

The accounts can be found at under the names of Danielle DiVittorio and Bryan Corbett. Killed in the Aug. 12 blast were borough manager Michael Thomas; borough Community development director Heather Oravitz and her husband, Paul, Kevin Sebunia and Casey and Keegan Clontz. While the exact cause of the blast has yet to be determined, "all findings to date that there are no factors external to the home that exploded that led to the explosion," the fire marshal's office said in a release. The initial update provided by emergency officials on Saturday afternoon can be seen below.

Those in Plum might have encountered Heather as the director of community development for the borough. This little corner of Rustic Ridge was known, at least by some neighbors, as Fraternity Row, because these families spent so much time together. Plum Borough School District, the University of Pittsburgh MAPS program, Alliance of Therapy Dogs and others have offered services or assistance to those who are emotionally impacted by the tragedy. Renton Volunteer Fire Department served as the staging area for collecting relief items. Mountains of bottled water, food and snacks piled up at the fire department in the days after the explosion. The borough announced that all events scheduled for Monday are canceled.

Emergency responders reported people trapped under debris after one house apparently exploded and two others were engulfed in flames, county spokesperson Amie Downs said. At least a dozen other houses were damaged in some way, Plum police said. Steve Imbarlina, the assistant chief for Allegheny County emergency services, said that two of the injured people had been released from the hospital and a third was in critical condition on Sunday afternoon. Heather Oravitz, 51, community development director for the borough, lived in the house that exploded and was killed, the Plum Borough mayor confirms. Her husband, Paul Oravitz, was in the hospital in critical condition but later died from his injuries, sources tell Channel 11. Plum officials are notifying Rustic Ridge homeowners whose houses were substantially damaged by the house explosion there two weeks ago that they may be eligible for a significant reduction in their property assessment.

One leak was along Kathy Lynn Drive and the other was at Crestview and Mower drives. The Regency Park and Rustic Ridge neighborhoods are about a 10-minute drive apart. To this point, there are holds on the three destroyed properties. This means nothing will be done to them, and any demolition would have to be approved by the borough. "In the meantime, we are bringing all of our resources to bear to help the Allegheny County fire marshal," Peoples Gas President Mike Huwar said.

The Allegheny County fire marshal’s office is leading the investigation, along with local law enforcement. Additionally, safety engineers have closely monitored the safe restoration of electric and natural gas service to undamaged homes in the neighborhood. Construction crews worked throughout the night, boarding up windows and doors of homes damaged by the blast, according to residents who stayed in their homes despite having no electric or natural gas service.

At the municipal center, Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts with Troop 111 were grilling hamburgers and hot dogs for residents and first responders on Sunday. The food came from an event that was canceled Saturday because of the stormy weather, said Jim Plutto, a committee chair with the troop. Food, charging stations and other amenities remain available at the municipal complex on Old Mine Road, borough officials said. “To me, it’s second nature — if someone needs help, people help,” he said. “There’s damage (to his home), but compared to everything else going on, it’s nothing,” he said. Jimmy Stecik was getting things together for a trip to Niagara Falls Saturday morning when he heard the explosion.

PLUM BOROUGH, Pa. — Six people are dead after an explosion on Rustic Ridge Drive in Plum Borough that destroyed three homes and damaged at least a dozen more. The Fire Marshal’s Office also encouraged homeowners to install combustible gas detectors and reminded residents that if they smell natural gas to not turn on appliances or light switches and exit the home and go to a safe area away from the house. People should call 911 and the gas company from outside the house, not reenter it and wait for first responders to arrive. Gov. Josh Shapiro announced Thursday he was ordering the state Department of Environmental Protection to open its own investigation into the Rustic Ridge explosion. Plum is home to several gas wells, a natural gas pipeline, abandoned mines and a long-burning underground mine fire.

Gov. Josh Shapiro issued a statement regarding the explosion, saying, in part, the administration and the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency will continue to be in contact with local officials. While authorities are still investigating what caused this to happen, George says he smelled what may have been gas before the explosion. "Please give us some time to deal with this situation and give the families your respect and give them some space to deal with this tragedy," Conley said. Asked about reports of water pressure issues the firefighters faced, he said the first hydrant tapped into was at the bottom of a nearby hill. So when firefighters tried to get water from another hydrant on top of the hill, the water pressure was not what it should have been. Firefighters were going door-to-door, checking outside gas lines and going inside houses.

Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA), Peoples Gas and other entities involved in the investigation of this incident. Three days after the deadly house explosion in Plum's Rustic Ridge neighborhood, crews investigated two gas leaks in Plum's Regency Park neighborhood on Tuesday. Thomas was the borough manager and Heather Oravitz was the community development director. PLUM, Pa. Whether it’s to marvel at the sparkle of the world’s largest carousel or to be awe-struck by the 200-foot sea creature, there’s something for everyone in the family to see here.

With no training as an architect or builder, or job, his home slowly expanded to 14 rooms that from the outside resembles a Japanese-style residence.
